Washington Navel Oranges
It is the queen.
A variety originated from a spontaneous mutation of Washington in the Lemon Cove area, California, where it was discovered in 1935 and began to be planted for commercial purposes immediately. It was introduced to Chile in 1968 and was possibly reintroduced in the early 1990s, so it was a variety known in the country before the start of orange exports.
The tree is almost indistinguishable from Washington Parent, although somewhat more compact. It has a spherical canopy with an open and slightly drooping growth habit, with branches that reach the ground; despite the fact that in evaluations carried out in California it had a lower yield than other varieties, it is considered a medium-production variety within the Navel group.
The fruit is medium or large in size, round in shape and with a navel somewhat more prominent than other Navel varieties. The intense orange skin is of intermediate thickness, firm and slightly rough. Its internal quality is similar to that of Washington P. With a good content of juice, acidity and sweetness. It is a variety much appreciated on the market as it presents an excellent combination of colour, shape and internal quality.
